Discover Chappaquiddick

Chappaquiddick Island is one of the most beautiful and remote areas of Martha’s Vineyard. The name Chappaquiddick originates from an Indian word “cheppiaquidne” which means “Separate Island.” Accessible only by ferry, Chappaquiddick is a quick journey across Edgartown Harbor and well worth the trip!
The One Time Ferry, which runs all year long, is the only way cars can access the Island. The ferry provides transportation for pedestrians and bicyclists as well. On a sunny August day do not be surprised to see long lines of beachgoers who have already caught on to the beautiful beaches located on Chappaquiddick!
The colorful cabanas at the privately owned Chappaquiddick beach club will greet you when you first get off the ferry.
The Trustee’s of the Reservation run the majority of the beaches located on Chappaquiddick. You will have to pay a fee to enjoy these beaches, but trust me it is well worth it! Wasque Point is a great place to enjoy ponds, the ocean and Katama Bay.
Mytoi, a Japanese garden located on Chappaquiddick is another highlight of the island. It’s a great place for reflection and mediation. Set among beautiful trees, bushes, and flowers it offers a totally unique experience. Also run by the Trustee’s this garden is free to enjoy.
Chappaquiddick is definitely a place to explore during your stay on Martha’s Vineyard. There are many vacation homes also located on Chappaquiddick that provide you with the same amenities as other vacation homes located on Martha’s Vineyard If your looking to experience a true “getaway” Chappaquiddick may be just what your looking for!

Martha’s Vineyard Vacation Rental: Chappaquiddick Compound

If you have a great big family or a huge group of friends, then this is the rental property for you. It sleeps 19! The main house has seven bedroom and two guest cottages have three additional bedrooms. Five bathrooms and, not one, but two outdoor showers round out the accommodations.
This beautifully renovated Victorian summer cottage is minutes from Wasque Point at the southeastern end of Chappy. A nature reserve with picnic tables and endless beach, swimming is prohibited, but surfcasting is fantastic in these waters – so you’ll see lots of off-road vehicles pulling up to fish. And the property itself has tennis and water access – it’s only a 1/2 mile for Katama Bay beach.
In the house itself, you’ll find a big, gorgeous kitchen and plenty of room to spread out, most sun-drenched on the cozy, comfy wrap-around porch. Perfect for relaxing after a ’strenuous’ day at the beach or having cocktails before a big lobster dinner. Either way, it’ll be you and eighteen of your most beloved friends and family, surrounded by the waters of Chappaquiddick.

Martha’s Vineyard Vacation Rental: Chappaquiddick Upside Down

In a place like Martha’s Vineyard, where the views are breathtaking and the sun beckons us out to play all day, I am a huge champion of the upside down house. If most indoor hours are spent in the common spaces – kitchen, living room, dining room – then doesn’t it make sense for them to be on the second floor, surrounded by windows out to the island? I think so!
This Chappaquiddick vacation rental is the ultimate reverse level post and beam contemporary house full of beautiful wood – floors, walls, ceilings and beams, of course, with built-in shelves everywhere you look.
Featuring 3 decks, a screened-in porch, patio, widows walk, and gorgeous waterviews from the second floor. But, don’t worry, you’ll be able to get your feet wet too. The house includes Katama Bay access right at end of the road. Additionally, a shared tennis court is included with the property rental.
‘Chappy’ is the island get away off the main island of Martha’s Vineyard. Accessible only by the small ‘On Time’ ferry that only holds a few cars at a time, this isolated retreat really lets you get away from it all. Stunning beaches and ocean to the horizon await…

New General Store opens on Chappaquiddick

Chappy has just about everything you could ever want in an island off an island – sand, sun, and surf. Peace & quiet, good neighbors, a sweet community. But it was missing something (until a few weeks ago)…a great general store called The Chappy Store.
Patrie Grace and her daughters have changed all that. They’ve opened a general store that carries basic groceries with a whole food, organic presence. They’ve got homemade muffins, sandwiches, chipwiches (ice cream sandwiches) and drinks. And it’s not all food! The store also sells planters, wooden toys and sketch books and more. Dedicated to keeping it local, they’ll sell Morning Glory Farms just picked produce.
You can find The Chappy Store two miles from the On Time ferry on Chappaquiddick road. I asked Patrie to describe the store in her own words, “It’s just me and my girls…and a cute and cozy lil grocery store.”
Martha’s Vineyard Vacation Rental: Chappaquiddick Cottage

If there is a quintessential Martha’s Vineyard beach cottage, this is it. If you aren’t familiar with Chappaquiddick, it’s a small island off the eastern tip of the Vineyard and part of Edgartown – though the residents of ‘Chappy’ consider themselves to be their own little island and village. And, now on to the perks of this fantastic cottage:
- Like so many Vineyard houses, the cedar shake shingles on this cottage become one with the sand, sun and air. As such, this cottage doesn’t disrupt then incredible views, it really becomes part of the scenery. With the windows open, and the breeze floating through, you get the feeling that you’re living right on the beach. And luckily, it’s only 300 feet away from your door!
- Still – this cozy cottage doesn’t leave you with only the bare essentials. It boasts a beautiful, fully equipped and modern kitchen, beautiful living room, a master bedroom with a queen sized bed and a ‘dormer’ with two bunk beds.
- Don’t forget about deck time! This Chappy cottage offers both a screened in porch so that you can enjoy the beach air without the sun and an open-air deck perfect for barbecues. And the views! Oh…the views. Water and sky as far as they eye can see around this charming slice of heaven!
If you’re interested in this Martha’s Vineyard Vacation Rental, please contact me! If you had something else in mind, I’d be happy to help you with that too.

Martha’s Vineyard Lingo: To Help You Get Around the Island
August 14, 2008 by Anne Mayhew
Some handy terms and quick explanations you should know so that you can find your way around the island and sound like an islander…
- You are going for a vacation ‘on’ the Vineyard, not ‘in’ or ‘at’ the Vineyard.
- ‘Chappy’ is short for Chappaquiddick, not what happens to your lips when you’ve been out in the sun for too long. Chappaquiddick is a small island that lies off the eastern tip of Martha’s Vineyard and is part of Edgartown. You can get to Chappy via a small ferry that holds a couple of cars and a bunch of people and bikes. It’s a great day trip from the Vineyard. Don’t forget to pack a lunch!
- 5 Corners is an adventuresome intersection in downtown Vineyard Haven. It is called 5 Corners because there are 5 streets that form the intersection. Move with caution as only 3 of the approaching roads have stop signs and the other 2 have the right of way. Drive slowly, be nice, enjoy this quirky attraction, and you’ll be just fine.
- ‘Squibby’ is short for one of the island’s beach treasures, Squibnocket, located in Chilmark as you head towards Aquinnah.
- The ‘Flying Horses’ make up the country’s oldest horse carousel. They are beautiful and an island highlight right in downtown Oak Bluffs.
- ‘Gay Head’ is now called ‘Aquinnah’ and it is the town at the farthest end from the ferries. It is the home of the Wampanoag Native American tribe and the stunning Aquinnah cliffs.
- ‘Quahog’s’ are clams….so Martha’s Vineyard’s quahog chowdah is clam chowdah – only better.
