Obama arrives on Martha’s Vineyard

Obamas

The first family arrived on Martha's Vineyard Sunday, August 23, 2009.

Whether you like him or not, it’s pretty darn exciting to have the President of the United States staying just down the road this week. The ’summer White House’ for 2009 is a private estate in Chilmark, Blue Heron Farm. Yesterday afternoon around 3:00 several helicopters, including Marine One, flew over the island and landed at the Martha’s Vineyard Airport. From there, they drove up South Road and into Chilmark in the motorcade – the streets lined with people, young and old, hoping to catch a glimpse of the first family, including Bo, the first dog.

The Secret Service and news trucks (even though Obama specifically told the journalists to just have fun this week) cover the long dirt road that leads to Blue Heron Farm, and islanders and summer visitors alike are curious about where the Obamas will go and what they’ll do. Rumors abound and are debunked just as quickly. The girls didn’t go to the Ag Fair on Saturday and Obama says he won’t be playing golf with Tiger Woods on our shores. But, will they go to the Farmer’s Market or Artisan’s Fair in West Tisbury? Will they venture down to the Flying Horses in Oak Bluffs? Will their staff run out for Mad Martha’s or will Barack, Michelle, Sasha and Malia stroll the streets of Vineyard Haven?

The plan seems to be ‘no plan’ – so, I think we’re going to all just have to keep our eyes peeled for any sightings! In the meantime, Plum TV’s Alex Friedman put together a great video that shows Blue Heron Farm and the beauty that is up-island Martha’s Vineyard. Enjoy and let me know if you see anything in the video that you can’t resist! I know we’ll be able to find you a vacation rental close by, you know, one that will let you live the dream you envision!

Martha’s Vineyard Vacation Rental: Chilmark Contemporary on Abel’s Hill

chilmarkexterior

This extraordinary and contemporary home is situated on five private wooded acres on North Abel’s Hill adjoining Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation conservation land. Abel’s Hill was named for a member of the Wampanoag Tribe in the early 1700’s and I can only guess that the landscape is just as beautiful, lush and quiet as it was back then.

Besides the privacy that this house affords with the surrounding woods, it also features a spacious master bedroom suite with its own private deck and fireplace for those cool Vineyard nights. The gourmet kitchen boasts marble countertops and premium appliances. But my favorite part of the house is the beautiful screened-in porch. I would actually just live out on the porch if I rented this house, isn’t it just gorgeous?

screenedporch

You know I don’t usually show bathrooms when I show rental house pics, but I just love these. They’re so pristine and the colors are so Vineyard. All four bedrooms (the house sleeps 10) have their own private bathroom plus a half-bath in the general living space.

The woods and Abel Hill surely invite hiking, but this house, of course, comes complete with access to Abel’s Hill Association Beach – nice and private, only 1.5 miles away…oh, and stunningly beautiful.

Chilmark Road Race 2009

rrmap

Every year on the second Saturday in August, islanders, summer people and visitors all gather at on Middle Road to make the 5K journey to Beetlebung Corner known as the Chilmark Road Race. It’s anual event that promises hilarity, fun, a nice workout and the experience of the Chilmark and the island community.

The 2009 Chilmark Road Race starts at 10:30 a.m on Saturday, August 8. You can run, walk or just cheer your little heart out…just like people have been doing since the race started in 1976. In the past, there have even been celebrity sightings! Jake Gyllenhaal anyone? You won’t want to miss it as this is one of those big events that marks the days of summer on Martha’s Vineyard.

Proceeds from the race benefit the Chilmark Community Center – a wonderful spot on the island that hosts the film festival, speakers, music, special events and their renowned summer camp.

SUN ROOM

Up-Island. It’s quiet, it’s easy. You don’t have to wear shoes if you don’t want to. And even the most posh dinner is fine eaten in khakis or jeans. The pace is just slower up here, everyone’s on beach time. This part of the island also features some of the best beaches, and this Chilmark rental comes with stickers (access) to the prized Squibnocket and Lucy Vincent beaches – spots so special that you practically need a map and a secret password to find them!

KITCHEN

Good-living. Open spaces, bright sunlight, a fireplace for those cool and cozy Chilmark nights! This house sleeps eight and the dining room table seats ten. Honestly, the house is just beautiful and the land around it is plentiful – and so very green during the Vineyard summer.

Martha’s Vineyard’s Nature Walks

squibby-april-06-5

I could decide to write about the many natural gems and places to explore on Martha’s Vineyard every day for a year and not run out of material!

Today, I’m picking two of our family’s favorite spots up in Chilmark: Fulling Mill and Squibnocket.

Fulling Mill is a fantastic hike through a 46-acre reserve that runs between Middle Road and South Road. For those of you who haven’t been to the Vineyard, don’t be fooled by these ’street names!’ Sometimes, I think these two roads were named so mundanely as a smokescreen because they are among the most beautiful roads on the island.

This trail follows a beautiful brook, complete with bridge walkways. You’ll walk through woods and open fields – the scenery changing quickly as it tends to do on the Island. As you get close to South Road, there are some great rocks in the water that my kids love to play on, getting their feet wet and splashing around. In season, there are loads of blueberries and huckleberries along the way and the brook is a great spot for trout fishing.

Right now at the Chilmark School, my kid’s are doing a fundraiser and getting sponsors for every trail walk they do this month – what a great way to inspire kids to get outside!
Sunrise on Squibnocket is pretty hard to beat – but it’s one of our favorite beaches. The best part is that the landscape of the beach changes regularly. Depending on storm patterns and other weather, the beach is sandy or rocky or loaded with shells. The kids love to hunt for arrowheads, sea glass, stones and shells. My sister-in-law collects agar, the seaweed alternative to gelatin in jello. I like to walk the beach and find that perfectly balanced mental place that I like to call ‘home.’

Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival

left_home1Looking for something really fun to do this weekend? Friday night, March 13th, kicks off the 2009 Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival’s Winter event at the Chilmark Community Center. What could be better than renting a house in Chilmark and taking in as many cool flicks as possible while the March winds blow! Many of the movies are followed by lively discussions with the directors or topic aficionados.

In the words of MVFF’s founder, Thomas Bena:

That is why I founded and continue to produce and direct the MVFF. I want to make a real contribution to my community’s cultural development—to establish a storefront, if you will, for ideas, inspiration, and bold questions.

Check here for the weekend’s schedule and don’t forget there’s a kid’s festival, too!

Don’t forget the popcorn!
